Arnold's seminar, Moscow University November 15, 2005 Jacques-Olivier Moussafir "Using some results from the theory of dynamical systems for industrial mixing" There are some industries, such as microfluidics, polymer industry or glass manufacturing, that involve some mixing operation. Many ideas directly borrowed from the study of dynamical systems help making efficient mixers. We'll present a short survey of them and insist on the problem of mixing in a canal. We'll explain for instance how braids can be used, how to define a mixing measurements, how to effectively compute them and finally how Thurston's classification of surface diffeomorphisms helps. ---- http://www.pdmi.ras.ru/~arnsem
