Moscow--Petersburg seminar on low-dimensional mathematics SPb, PDMI, 07.12.2001, 16:00--17:45, room 311 "Could the Poincare Conjecture be false?" A.B.Sossinsky (Independent University of Moscow) In the first part of the talk, I will prove a theorem of mine asserting that the Poincare Conjecture is false provided that a certain problem in group theory is algorithmically undecidable. In the second, after reviewing some classical results on algorithmic undecidability in group theory, I will speculate about the validity of the hypothesis of my theorem and demonstrate some topological constructions that may lead to other reductions related to the invalidation of the conjecture. ----------------------------------------------------------- Seminar home-page http://www.pdmi.ras.ru/~duzhin/LDM/
