Minimal Round Functions on Low-Dimensional Manifolds

Abstract: We consider functions on manifolds with critical sets equal to
disjoint unions of several smoothly embedded circles and investigate
topological properties of those of such functions which have the minimal
number of critcal loops. The geometric structure and transversal
singularities of minimal round functions on compact surfaces are described
explicitely. We also investigate round functions on 3-dimensional manifolds.
This is joint research with G. Khimshiashvili.
