Moscow-Petersburg seminar on low-dimensional mathematics Friday, February 7, 2003, 16:00, room 311, PDMI Low-dimensional fibers of real polynomial mappings G.Khimshiashvili (Tbilisi--Lodz) We describe some effective methods of topological investigation of the fibers of proper real polynomial mappings. It will be shown that in many cases such information can be obtained from algebraic formulas for the Euler characteristic. Using this, we study some low dimensional configuration spaces of planar graphs. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the well known topological classification of configuration spaces of planar pentagons. ----------------------------------------------------------- Seminar home-page http://www.pdmi.ras.ru/~lowdimma
